Veto Power

The Veto Power is one of the major aspects of United Nations Security Council. This power enables all the member countries to go against the decisions taken by United Nations. The role of this Security Council is very important because this is the organization that plays the key role in maintaining international peace. One of the most important steps that has been taken by this organization is to execute disarmament throughout the world. Only the permanent members in United Nations Security Council have the right to execute the Veto Power. There are also some elected members in United Nations Organization but these member countries can only express their opinions. They are not allowed to apply Veto Power.

The most important thing about the Veto Power is the “nay” vote. Absence of any member or avoiding the vote does not have equal values to Veto Power. This power comes into action if any of the permanent members apply the “nay” vote. But one thing must also be considered that although the elected members do not have the right to apply the Veto Power, their opinions are taken very seriously by all other major members.

Article 27 in the Constitution which is followed by the United Nations is main role player which says everything about the Veto Power. Soviet Russia was the country to use the Veto Power for the largest number of times in the history of United Nations. They have executed seventy nine vetoes in ten years. America used it for the first time in the year 1970. France also used this power during the war in Iraq.

There are talks going on about some newer powers in the world to be enlisted in this Veto Power membership. India is also among them. Although it is true that all the steps of United Nations can be stopped by a single application of Veto Power, there are discussions going on about starting election system in Veto Power application. This is hoped to maintain the republic structure of United Nations in a true manner.
